Whether you’re a steadfast supporter or a curious skeptic, this book invites you to reevaluate your understanding of not just Trump but the entire political landscape.

Unmasking the Derangement: Understanding the Backlash Against Trump

In his insightful analysis, Hanson expertly details the derangement that many experience when they engage with Trump’s presidency. He argues that Trump has become the catch-all for blame in a society grappling with confusion and uncertainty. Is it possible that the disdain directed towards him often stems from a deeper misunderstanding of the world? Hanson’s profound insights encourage readers to look beyond the headlines and explore the real reasons behind the political chaos.

A Fresh Perspective: The Outsider Who Changed Politics Forever

One of the most stimulating aspects of this book is how Hanson provides a fresh perspective on Trump’s rise to power. How did a political outsider with no traditional backing win the 2016 election against all odds? Hanson takes a step back and analyzes how Trump resonated with the American people by articulating what they were yearning to hear. He didn’t just campaign; he engaged, and he did so with his own resources—his own money, rather than relying on PACs or campaign contributions.

This book goes beyond traditional narratives, showcasing how Trump’s unconventional approach was a response to the disillusionment felt by many. It urges readers to consider the accomplishment behind the controversial persona, highlighting how he delivered on his promises, despite the chaos that surrounded his administration.

I have a deep appreciation for Victor Davis Hanson’s work, whether it’s his articles or his books. They are always well-researched, knowledgeable, and insightful. However, I opted for the audiobook this time, and I was disappointed to find that Mr. Hanson is not an engaging speaker. His monotonous delivery fails to capture the brilliance of his writing and could easily lull even the most devoted fans to sleep. I give 5 stars for his writing but only 2 stars for the narration. I couldn’t get through more than half of the audiobook and will definitely choose a hardcopy next time.

I really enjoyed the content! However, I was let down by the voice actor. I was hoping to hear VDH’s voice instead.

I haven’t read the earlier editions of this book released during President Trump’s administration; my focus has solely been on the 2024 edition, which features around 55 pages of updated content covering events post-2020. Notably, the new material does not address the Trump-Biden Debate, the attempted assassination of Trump, or the perceived coup favoring VP Harris as the Democratic candidate for the upcoming election, which seems to overlook the voices of Democratic primary voters. As someone who has reviewed numerous history books on Amazon, I received an advanced copy of this one from the publisher.

In this review, I approach the book as I would any other history text. Victor Davis Hanson is a respected historian and classicist, renowned for his sharp analysis and command of language. This book does not serve as an apologetic for Trump; rather, it presents a balanced examination of his strengths and weaknesses, alongside the political climate that propelled him to the presidency.

Several key points from Hanson stood out to me while reading. He notes that television news once used red to represent predominantly Democratic states and blue for Republican ones, a color scheme that makes more sense to me than the current designations. My recent readings on Stalinist USSR have led me to view the current Democratic Party as employing tactics reminiscent of the Bolsheviks (red).

Hanson writes, “Trump had an uncanny ability to prune away prophesies and get to the heart of what people thought rather than what they professed.” He also highlights a flaw in Trump’s negotiating style: while Trump believed his brinkmanship would be appreciated, his negotiating partners did not always agree.

Critics have targeted Trump for his immigration views, yet many of these same criticisms were once voiced by Democratic leaders. Hanson reminds readers that until the 21st century, the Democratic Party staunchly opposed illegal immigration. Figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer previously resisted open borders. Cesar Chavez, in response to low-paid undocumented workers entering the U.S., initiated his “Illegals Campaign” to combat unlawful entry.

During Obama’s presidency, he informed Latino advocacy groups that he could not offer open borders or blanket amnesty due to existing laws, a point seemingly ignored by the Biden administration. Hillary Clinton even warned in 2014 that deportation remained a possibility for those using children to circumvent immigration laws, stating, “We have to send a strong message; just because your child gets across the border, that doesn’t mean the child gets to stay.”

Critics also expressed outrage over Trump’s compliments to Putin, yet they overlooked Obama’s courting of Castro and the Iranian leadership, where he often praised them. Some on the left label Trump as “mean” and crude while dismissing the vitriol directed at him and his family. Hanson cites Peter Fonda, who made threats against Trump’s family, and Julia Joffe of Politico, who suggested incest between Trump and his daughter.

Moreover, Hanson discusses how some on the far left fantasized about a murdered Trump, with Johnny Depp and other actors wishing for a modern-day John Wilkes Booth. He explores why many on the right, who value self-sufficiency, supported Trump as a rejection of the Democratic Party’s narrative that encourages Americans to relinquish personal responsibility. He references the Obama-era propaganda promoting figures like Pajama Boy and the “Life of Julia,” which urged voters to allow the state to take over their responsibilities.

Interestingly, Hanson mentions future VP candidate J.D. Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy” within the text, published six years prior.

I haven’t explicitly stated whether Hanson makes a case for Trump. To find that answer for yourself, I recommend this book to open-minded readers across the political spectrum.

VDH highlights the confusion that arises among those who lack an understanding of the world. I’ve noticed that Trump has become a scapegoat for individuals facing various issues. VDH explains that regardless of his political actions, some people refuse to engage with the policies and simply dislike him, often without a clear reason.

Victor Davis Hanson is a genuinely honest individual who has a remarkable ability to convey complex ideas in a straightforward and accessible manner. I’ve listened to numerous speeches, interviews, and podcasts across various topics, and I find myself intrigued by the subjects that captivate VDH. There is no hint of deceit or agenda in his work, and that authenticity is crucial for me when considering contemporary intellectuals. The topic of this book undeniably places it in the “must-have” category, and I pre-ordered it at the earliest opportunity. My only slight concern is that the author is not the narrator. While VDH’s diction and style may not lend themselves perfectly to narration, I would have preferred to hear his passionate delivery of his insights. I am truly thankful for Victor’s honesty, his brilliant mind, and the extensive effort he put into researching and writing this book. More importantly, I appreciate his ability to analyze Donald Trump with a clarity and depth that few other intellectuals can offer. Thank you, Victor, for this invaluable contribution.

Incredible. This is a biased and absurd piece filled with racist ideas. Can we call it morally bankrupt?

Often, when faced with a problem, it’s important to take a step back and view it from a different angle. That’s precisely what Victor Davis Hanson accomplished in his analysis of how Donald Trump, an outsider with no political experience or support, managed to win the 2016 election despite polls predicting his loss. He tapped into the desires of the people and communicated what they wanted to hear. Unlike traditional candidates who rely on campaign or PAC funding, Trump backed his words with his own money and spoke his way into office. While he may come across as unconventional, arrogant, or politically incorrect, his achievements to date reflect the promises he made during his campaign.
